Berman’s Bookclub

Yeah, it’s just not as catchy as Oprah’s book club, is it? I just wanted to give you all a head’s up on something that came up in the Little Office at the Top of the Stairs.

At some point while I was writing The Gilmore Girls Companion, I made a note to myself to warn folks about the spoilers lurking in its pages. Naturally I forgot all about this until just now, so I thought I’d shout it from the digital rooftops here.

Spoilers Ho!!!

Though I know most of you have seen the entire series many times, I’m sure there are a few of you who have not. Since one of the goals I had for the book was to track themes that crop up throughout the series, entries for one episode often will include info about story lines from future ones — there was really no other way to work it.

Therefore, if you’re one of those people who hasn’t seen the whole series and welcomes spoilers about as much as you do Taylor’s Taylor-ness in real life, you might want to steer clear of the “Notes” section for each entry until you get all caught up on your Gilmore Girls viewing.

(Wow, that was nowhere near as inspiring as the Oprah book club. Really gotta get my act together.)

I managed to let slip a large spoiler to a friend who was new to gilmore which resulted in her sitting down to finish the last 2 series in one go as she didnt beleive it could happen from where she was in series 5, the whole afternoon that i was with her after letting slip she kept saying ” no do they really?” in disbelief, i felt terrible!

Oh my! I’m guessing we can all guess what that spoiler was. I, for one, would’ve reacted exactly the same way if somebody had told me what was going to happen.

My copy of the Gilmore Girls Companion arrived at my doorstep on Friday, and I’ve spent the entire weekend reading and re-reading this amazing book! Aaron, you should be very, very proud of what you’ve accomplished in putting all these GG stories and memories together! What a great way to honor such an amazing series!! I would like to say thank you for all the years of hard work that went into putting this book together!

Now that you’ve successfully completed this book, could you start another behind-the-scenes book about my second favorite tv show, Friends? =)

Lynn, thank you so much for your kind words about the book; I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I’m especially impressed by your having read through it so quickly — now I think you can see why it took so long to write, not to mention edit.

I must admit that I’m nowhere near as familiar with Friends as I am with Gilmore Girls — part of what got me through those 480 pages was my unflagging love for Gilmore. The other thing that made that book possible was the utter lack of books about the making of Gilmore Girls. It seems to me that I’ve seen a few books out there about Friends. Still, if an in-depth Friends book is something people would like to read, I’d certainly be interested in looking into it.

In the meantime, I’ve started work on another “making of” book — this one on the 70s/80s sitcom, Soap. Anyone interested in that project can head over to http://soapcompanion.wordpress.com/. This was actually supposed to be my next book — I started interviewing people back in April 2008, but then I got so caught up in working on the Gilmore book, I had no choice but to shelve Soap until now.

I feel extremely privileged to be in a position to spend so much time writing about subjects that I enjoy researching. Believe me when I say I realize how lucky I am to be able to do it. (Plus it gives me an excuse to geek out about Gilmore Girls with like-minded souls — awesomeness!)
