The Final Push
The “Friday Night Dinner” entry has become such a habit these last few months, I find myself automatically writing it come Friday morning. Ah well, go with what you know.
First, as you can see, we’ve got ourselves a new cover. Now here’s what’s going on with the book.
Indexing has turned out to take a lot longer than we had expected; we’re planning on getting that finished today. The last time we indexed a book, it was 235 pages and didn’t have anywhere near the number of references that the Gilmore book does. (Part of that is because we’re indexing a lot of the lines/phrases that Gilmore Girls is known for so that you can locate which episodes they’re in, e.g., “Oy with the poodles, already.”)
While I’m doing the indexing, Pamela’s going to finish up the back cover, do some test prints, and make sure the images throughout the book are ready for press. Watch this blog, as we’re hoping to have some sample pages up here before long.
All our fact-checking inquiries have been answered as of yesterday, so we’re no longer waiting for those. On Monday, I am very hopeful that we’ll be able to report that this puppy has finally gone off to the publisher! (Hey, no placing of bets. I saw that, gang.)

Woohoo! I like that one. It’s definitely an improvement from the first one, not that the first cover was ugly, but this one looks better. Just the mug could have been smaller… Oh, so what, the girls never knew a little, tiny cup either, so why should you?

Hi David; thanks for writing. I’m glad you brought up the subject of who’s on/not on the cover; in hindsight it does beg some kind of explanation. Here’s where we’re coming from:
First, with limited space on the cover, you’re bound to leave off some characters in favor of others, unless you just flood the cover with images (which looks something like a patchwork quilt no matter how you work it). If you look at just the very first episode of Gilmore Girls alone, you have 11 characters, most of whom will be there throughout the series. And with every subsequent season, you add more.
With that in mind, we went with the ones that we thought were either the most popular, the most integral to the series, or the ones who consistently have the best lines. Naturally you have to include Lorelai, Rory, Emily and Richard. After that you have Luke, who was always the other half of Lorelai in some way throughout the entire series. Lane had her own strong story line throughout the series as well, whether it was Hep Alien, her trying to get out from under the thumb of Mrs Kim, or starting her own family. Personally I would’ve loved to put Paris on the cover as she’s probably my favorite character in the Gilmore universe, but again, you run into that problem of not being able to put everybody on there.
I hope that explains the thought process a little better, David.
Like the new cover a lot. I think the choice of Kirk is a good one. He was such a great running gag throughout the series.
Best of luck with the indexing – I can only imagine what a job that must be! Can’t wait to read the book, though I will miss your updates. It’s been a fun following the entire process of putting this book together. 🙂
Thanks, Annie. I’m sure I’ll be blathering on occasionally about our shared mania for all things Gilmore…unless everyone makes it very clear that they’d rather I didn’t.
And on the subject of the cover, I think it’s also worth pointing out that with 480 pages (as of yesterday), we really hope you’ll find more than enough about the show in this book to smooth any ruffled feathers about who is or isn’t on the cover.
Hi…i liked the old cover MUCH better and i thought it was going to open sideways??? I loved the Gilmore Girls Show,so i will for sure purchase this book but i just thought the old cover was much nicer.
Hi Belle. Sorry to hear the new cover doesn’t sit as well with you as the first one. Unfortunately, the resolution of the first cover’s image was too low, so that it would look too fuzzy on the printed page. Also, I understand the confusion over how the book would have opened. It was always going to open like a proper book. The title was printed sideways 1) to match the orientation of the photo, and 2) to emphasize the quirkiness of the series. In hindsight that might not have been the best way to do things, but no mater. Water under the bridge as they say.
It’s actually been a very interesting exercise, sharing the creation of this book from beginning to end, though I know it’s nothing particularly unique these days. However, it lets everybody in on how, when and why these little decisions are made, from how the cover is created to what goes into the writing of the book. Part of me is a little shy about all that — the comparison that naturally occurs to me is a restaurant and the question of “Do you REALLY want to see how your food is prepared?” That said, I hope this has all been as fun for you peeking in from time to time as it’s been for us sharing this.
