Friday Night Dinner 8

The eighth in a weekly look at the progress of The Gilmore Girls Companion as we round the bend on this 2+ year adventure.

This week has been all about that feeling of being so close to finished with this project, yet still seeing so many little things left to do to actually complete it. This should give you some idea of what I mean, and where we are with the layout process.

Step 1: Actually put all of the raw text of the main narrative on the page. Done.

Step 2: Format the text of the main narrative (e.g., italicize TV/book titles, get rid of extraneous spaces, etc.) and give it all a cursory read-through. Done.

Step 3: Drop in sidebars, margin information, pullquotes, etc., roughly where they should go throughout the book. (A great deal of the behind-the-scenes information appears in sidebars alongside each episode’s writeup, to give the reader some context for what’s being said.) Done.

Step 4: Format each sidebar/pullquote, etc., so it’s set aside from the main text, and ensure that each of these elements appears exactly where it needs to be to make sense. (In other words, a sidebar isn’t of much help if it’s about something that happened during the making of Season 3/Episode 7 if the sidebar is actually on a different page.) This step, we’re about halfway done with.

The next three steps to come:

-Polish the design of the interior pages

-Edit the entire book.

-Send the completed book off to the printer!

And with that, I think it’s time I got back to it. Thanks for checking in 🙂
